It's a 90 minute boring desert drive home from MM80, so I finally broke the news to Catty that her daddy is dead. That he died in his car right there where we took the picture.
It was a very interesting talk. I guess I should have planned out what I was going to say better, but who can predict how a conversation with a 3-yr old is going to go??
It was a sad conversation on many levels, but broken up with hilarity at the perspectives of a 3 yr old.
"Daddy is dead, Catty. He's up in the clouds now. He had an accident in his car and he died."
"Daddy's dead? He can't move?"
"That's right. He's dead. He's up in the sky now."
"But Daddy's dead. He can't get up to the sky." ...pause... "He needs wings mommy! To go up to the sky!"
"Yes, he has wings now. So he's up in the sky. Up in the clouds now."
...pause... "Up in the sky?"
"Yes."
"With aliens??"
(trying not to laugh too loudly) "Uh, yeah, I guess so"
"My Daddy is up in the clouds! With aliens! My daddy is in the clouds with aliens!!"
...pause...
"Mommy, we need a telescope like DORA [a popular children's character], so we can see DADDY and STARS and ALIENS!!"
Well at this point I couldn't stop laughing, so I just let the conversation end there. I guess that's what I get for trying to discuss an important death with a 3 year old. ;o)
