me2 versus Asia

Mayhem in Malibu

Unreal Tournament
May 13, 2000

me2, a diehard Quake 2'er for over a year. Asia, a newcomer to the first-person shooter scene. It was only a matter of time before these two friends would become bitter rivals in the venue known as Unreal Tournament (UT) .

In the winter of 1999-2000, Asia started playing UT. Those around her were drafted into becoming minions for her target practice. Simple scrimmages soon evolved into all night rampages. Mouse pads became an endangered species. Grabbing all the new maps that her 24 kbps modem could handle, she scoured the levels in search of the redeemer. The thirst for blood is never satiated.

In March of 2000, me2 learned of Asia's penchant for UT. He himself was quite happy to grenade spam and BFG the maps of Quake 2, but the thought arose "What would it be like to play Asia? What kind of fragger could the world's cutest dictator be?" A challenge was cast, a location was chosen and a date was set. me2 had two months to learn the finer points of Ripper decapitation, flak shell launching and finding those handy shield belts.

Date: May 9-14, 2000

Location: An isolated mountaintop in Malibu, California

The weeklong meeting coincided with the Electronics Entertainment Expo being conducted in Los Angeles. By day, we could see the future of frag fests. At night, we held friendly warmup matches, exercising the often strange and twisted maps that Asia had downloaded. (Here's a pic of Asia in her fraggin' posture) By this time, Asia had also trained herself in the art of skinning. Why not make your favorite game even better by putting yourself (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) into it? She had made two Asia skins already, and after some brainstorming, she spent a night creating the me2 skin. The match would become even more personal now that we could each wear our respective skins.

Saturday, May 13th was the night. No more warmups. Now every frag will count, every victory savored. Since it was Asia's house, we played by Asia's rules, and these were:

The hardware used were:

And the results...

It was a hard fought battle, but to make a long story short, ASIA WON. Asia had a record of 15 wins and 12 losses with 187.4 FPH. me2 had 9 wins and 17 losses with 169.2 FPH. Of course, no competition would be complete without a trophy (closeup of the inscription). And proudly, the victor displays her spoils.
